Years After The Jalara

Chapters 1-3

Chapter 1

Deanna stood on a hilltop outside the city over looking the Jalara. Memories of years past went through her head. Memories of a love from long ago and far away. The memories were of unbridled passion. Memories of the days in the Jalara with Will Riker. Days of exploring each other and each other souls. Yes, he was her rescuer from the Sindareen who tried to kidnap her, but he was much more than that.

He was her Imzadi. She could never forget him, for he was the first. The first to touch her soul. The first to touch her very being. Her essence. She couldn't bring herself to say good bye to Will nor could she forget him. She still had deep seeded feelings for him. Emotions so deep a river of water could not begin to fill. She really wanted to be with him, but now it was over.

Or was it. She had met others, but it was not the same. She still had the poem Will had written her 8 years ago. It was such a beautiful poem. Written from the heart and soul. She carried it with her every where she went for fear she would misplace it otherwise.

She had just graduated from the University of Betazed with full honours and received a Doctorate in Psychology. She was not the same young university student she was when she first met Will Riker. She had changed and grown, but the lingering unclosed past still followed her. She longed for him to hold her in his arms and make mad passionate love to her again.

Now, she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. All she knew was she did not want to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a delegate of the Fifth House of Betazed, but what did she want to do?

She took the poem out of her pocket and reread it again for the umpteenth time since Will wrote it. Everytime she read it she heard Will's voice as she read. Oh, but that was long ago, but still she wanted Riker. She wanted to feel the passion she had for him years ago and see his face again.

She sat down on the hillside and thought for many hours. Finally, she came to a decision. She was going to join Star Fleet and start a career there. Maybe that would not get Will Riker back, but at least she would be closer to him. She knew she should forget him, but just couldn't. She had to be closer to him. Star Fleet was the only answer.

It didn't matter what her mother had to say or what her mother wanted for Deanna's life. She was going to start making her own decisions and create her own life away from all this tradition and heritage malarkey. The only thing that mattered was what she wanted for her life. She wanted Will Riker and if it took being the best damn Counselor Star Fleet had to get there, that's what she would do.

Chapter 2

"Where have you been Little One?" Lwaxana started in as soon as Deanna walked through the door. "You've been gone for hours!"

"I've been thinking Mother" Deanna responded.

Deanna proceeded up to her room, while her mother followed her up the stairs.

"About what?" Lwaxana asked.

"I have made a decision, Mother," she said while packing her bags,"and you can't talk me out of it."

"And what might that be?"

Deanna proceeded to tell her mother about her plans to join Star Fleet knowing full well what her mother would say. However, she left out the part of Will Riker and tried to block him from her mother's strong telepathic senses.

"Little One, think about tradition, your heritage!" Lwaxana Troi said trying to install reason into her daughter.

"Mother, all you think about is tradition and heritage. Why can't you just say RaBeem and leave it alone for once."

"I'm only looking out for what's best for you, Little One." Lwaxana stated.

"No Mother. You're only looking out for your interests and don't call me Little One!" Deanna demanded, "I'm a grown woman now. I can make my own decisions."

"It's that Lieutenant again isn't it?" Lwaxana stated, "He's not right for you. He'll only bring you heartache and pain again."

"No Mother. "That's your opinion. I want to have a life of my own." Deanna stated, "I don't want you controlling my life any more!"

"Lit. A. Deanna. Please!" Lwaxana pleaded, "I don't want to see you hurt again."

"I'm going Mother" and with that Deanna Troi walked out of her mother's house and was on her way to the Star Fleet headquarters on Betazed.

Chapter 3

Shortly after departing from Betazed Will Riker laid on his bed in his quarters. He stared out the window above his bed. Kicking himself for all he had done.

"Ah, why did I mess up with Deanna Troi." he said to himself. He realized he let a good thing slip away.

Why did he have to get drunk and then find himself the next morning in bed with Wendy Roper? Why did Deanna have to come to his quarters on Betazed the next day and see him and Wendy together!

"Oh, hell, Riker! Admit it. You screwed up the best damn thing you ever had!"

He sat up. He started mourning the situation. Suddenly, he realized the real reason he could not say good bye that last day at the museum. He remembered her thoughts touching him and finally realized the true meaning of the word she spoke to him in the Jalara. Imzadi.

She had touched his soul from the very start. The deepest essence of who he was. He was not only affected by her physical beauty, though beautiful as it was, but also the crevasses of her very being. Her essence. Her spirit. The very deep meaning of the word Imzadi. There were no words to describe the true meaning, but a love so deep. So profound. He had no words, but understood. He now fulling understood, but it was too late.

He could still feel her, as though she were still with him in this very room. But alas, she was gone. Could there, would there, be any chance of seeing her again? Would there be a second chance? Somehow, in the near distant future, he felt there would be.
